Plastic Free Beyond July

Plastic Free July is a campaign that asks people to change their approach to single-use plastics for a month a year.  With the campaign drawing to a close, let’s take this opportunity to reflect on what we have learned and how we can change our behaviours beyond Plastic Free July.

Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’ calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the moral and social dimensions of the ecological crisis.  The Pope invites individuals and communities to make a selfless ecological commitment.  Being more aware of our plastic usage and developing new daily habits will help to protect the environment.

Tips for reducing plastic waste in July and beyond
  • Leaf tea instead of tea bags
  • Coffee beans instead of coffee pods
  • Make your own snacks, cakes, or bread
  • Cloth face masks instead of disposable masks
  • Beeswax wraps or containers instead of cling wrap, or even pop a plate over a bowl in the fridge
  • Paper wrapped toilet paper instead of plastic-wrapped toilet paper
  • Blow bubbles, not balloons and host plastic-free parties
  • Avoid buying products with plastic wrap, buy those in cardboard if possible
  • Keep cups instead of takeaway coffee cups
  • Reusable bags instead of plastic bags
  • Did you forget your reusable bags?  Buy loose fruit and vegetables in the supermarket instead of using their plastic bags and put them in a box
  • Be prepared with reusable cutlery, crockery, glasses, and containers for picnics and parties
  • Refillable water bottles instead of plastic bottles
  • No straws or reusable straws instead of plastic straws
