Fire Carrier Initiative

Our Lady of Good Counsel School is proud to be a FIRE Carrier School (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education).  FIRE Carriers are students and teachers that share a passion for learning about Aboriginal culture and history and are committed to sharing this knowledge and promoting reconciliation within and beyond the school community.

This year we began developing our Aboriginal garden to acknowledge the land that our school sits on and pay respect to the Wurundjeri people.  As part of the Proud Race initiative, which enables schools to record and celebrate the stories of Indigenous Australians on life-size bollards, the OLGC Art Club created art pieces to be installed into the garden.  Each painting explores the artistic style of eight renowned Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.  Students in the Art Club explored colours, stories and composition while incorporating their own symbols to represent our school and community.  We also had a Wurundjeri elder come in to host a smoking ceremony and blessing over the space during Reconciliation Week.

We invite all parishioners to come and view our bollards next time they visit.
