St Vincent de Paul – Supporting Families

John Morrissey, a member of St Vincent de Paul Camberwell Conference for nearly 20 years,  reflects on his time and the work with the Conference.

Since joining the Camberwell Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society nearly 20 years ago, I have gained so much personally.  The core work of the conference has been that which our founder, Frederic Ozanam, undertook in Paris in 1833, which is visiting those in need and providing social and material support.  It is our privilege to lend a sympathetic ear and provide food, clothing, household goods and assistance with bills.  For us it also has a spiritual reward, mindful of Jesus’ promise of salvation through serving the poor (Matthew 25:35-41).  We do this work not only in the Hawthorn-Camberwell area but in North and South Melbourne, where there is widespread need for help.  This year we have been unable to make home visits, but have continued with telephone calls and delivery of material aid.

All this is possible because of your compassion and support of the St Vincent de Paul Society.  Your donations play a critical role in sustaining the Society’s work.  Proceeds from the Vinnies stores are also important, but the Coronavirus pandemic closed many stores.  Some stores have been able to reopen recently but the earnings from these stores have been drastically affected this year.

Christmas is only three weeks away and this should be a time of sharing and celebration, but for many it is a time of hunger, stress, and hardship.  Your gift could change lives.  Through your support, many individuals and families will be able to have the Christmas they deserve, a Christmas of hope and joy.   Donations may be made by way of:-
